Under general supervision, the Communications Specialist prepares comprehensive organization-wide communications across various mediums, aligning with organizational goals. This position supports communications and marketing projects by developing visual and descriptive material for media such as websites, print, and publications. The Communications Specialist assists with internal and external communications as well as photography efforts, ensuring a consistent level of quality and brand identity throughout.

- Assists in the developing, preparing, and distributing information about KANA. Engages in various communication channels, including publications, flyers, community announcements, advertising, and other activities as assigned.
- Conducts copy-editing and proofreading to uphold quality and adheres to corporate standards across a range of media and marketing copy.
- Partners with internal groups to understand communication needs, actively participating in the development and delivery of comprehensive communication plans. Coordinates with internal groups to develop content covering all aspects of the organization, including internal communications that ensure employees are well-informed about organizational activities.
- Ensures organization messages align with the cultivated image for KANA, meeting KANA’s quality and brand standards.
- Proactively prepares content for external and internal publications such as newsletters, Annual Reports, website, and social media.
- Markets internal and external events hosted or sponsored by KANA as requested.
- Provides support for organization-wide all-hands events, demonstrating flexibility to contribute beyond regular tasks.
- May organize photoshoots, take photos for organizational publications, and ensures photos/videos are taken at important KANA events as appropriate.
- Provides technical assistance and resources materials to staff to assist in the marketing and communications of KANA events and activities.
- Manages slideshow presentations in public lobbies, ensuring accuracy and up-to-date information.
- May work with external marketing partners, vendors, and consultants as needed to coordinate marketing efforts.
- May support procurement, organization, and distribution of promotional materials and gifts, including tracking inventory and fulfilling special merchandise orders as needed.
Communications Specialist II
The Communications Specialist II role encompasses all responsibilities of a Specialist I and extends further, showcasing growth in various areas:
- Enhanced Knowledge: Demonstrates a deep understanding of KANA culture and branding, alongside proficiency in independent project management, stakeholder engagement, and fostering effective collaborations.
- Cultural Awareness: Exhibits an expanded understanding of KANA, organizational brand identity, Sugpiaq Alutiiq culture, and the diverse communities within the Koniag Region.
- Initiative: Organizes meetings and manages mid-scale collaborative projects, demonstrating the ability to drive communications initiatives forward.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Actively interacts with KANA stakeholders across multiple platforms, showcasing proficiency in both virtual and traditional communication channels.
- Data Management: Assists in compiling and analyzing data for various reports, ensuring accuracy and timeliness to facilitate organizational assessments and strategic decision-making.
- Mentorship: Provides guidance and support to Communications Specialist I team member(s), sharing acquired knowledge and fostering professional growth within the team.
Supervisory Responsibilities This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements
Associate's degree or technical school degree in Journalism, Marketing, Communications or related field, and two years related experience and/or training. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered. Excellent writing and proofreading skills, and oral and written communication skills. Experience with photography, photo-editing and graphics creations skills is preferred. Ability to think creatively, work calmly under pressure, and solve problems in a timely manner. Highly organized with the ability to complete multiple projects simultaneously while producing quality work.
